Queen Charlotte's Cottage | The Palace Collection

Tucked within the grounds of Kew Palace, at Kew Gardens, the Picnic Room in Queen Charlotte’s Cottage was a rustic escape from formal obligations in a world where privacy was rare. It features intricate hand painted walls, likely by Princess Elizabeth, daughter of George III. Mandarin garnets, coloured sapphires and green tourmalines bring bamboo and nasturtiums to life, accented by delicate sprays of brilliant cut diamonds.

Queen Charlotte's Cottage Bangle

Bangle featuring cabochon mandarin garnets with pear and trilliant cut green tourmalines, multi coloured sapphires and diamonds, set in yellow gold

Queen Charlotte’s Cottage, situated in the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, is believed to have been built around 1771 for Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III. The winding floral motifs visible within the picnic room inspired the shapes of the jewellery pieces, while the colours of the gemstones reflect the mural painted on the interiors by Queen Charlotte’s daughter. The bamboo theme within the cottage is echoed in the structure of the gold in the sautoir necklace.
The suite reflects the familial warmth which lives on today in the paintings within the cottage, and now within this suite.
